Aging of the Physician Workforce

  • The average age of a physicians in North Carolina has steadily increased since the year 2000.
  • The rural physician workforce is aging at a faster pace than the metro workforce. In 2000, only 1.5 years separated the average age of metro and rural physicians. By 2016, rural physicians were, on average, 4.2 years older.
